The possible return of No Love

14/02/2014

NoLove2014

Back in 1989 Arachnidiscs Recordings began with demo tapes released on an imprint called No Love Records. Naturally, being a 1990’s label, No Love focused on punk and music that fell under the relevant-at-the-time label of “alternative” rock. In it’s days No Love never released a single vinyl record. Apparently, ten years on that bothered me so much that I looked for a new name for the label as we headed into the new century. Goodbye No Love, hello Arachnidiscs.

Anyway, if you’ve perused the Arachnidiscs  mission statement before, it’s clear there’s a number of genres not suitable to the Arachnidiscs aesthetic. This includes things like punk and alternative, no matter how weird the music is or how weird the people making it might actually be.

Lately, that’s kind of made me sad to say “no” to some pretty interesting projects so I’ve been toying with the idea of reviving the No Love imprint for a few select releases. I wasn’t going to announce it until agreements were nailed down with the bands, but how could I not announce this on Valentine’s Day?

Stay tuned? Maybe…

Revised 2013 Release Schedule + Submissions

30/10/2013

Packages

Since we just dispatched the pre-orders for the BEARD CLOSET / PRIMATE PYRAMID tape, and it’s official release is tomorrow, we figured it’s a good time to post our revised release schedule that will bring us up to the end of 2013.

  • Oct. 31: BEARD CLOSET / PRIMATE PYRAMID tape
  • Nov. 11: PARTLI CLOUDI “Two Moron Ever Nose” CD
  • Nov. 25: BABEL “Sturm und Drang” CDEP
  • Dec. 02: MUTED RAINBOW “Intuitions” CD
  • Dec. 16: ROSS BAKER / TRANZMIT tape
  • Dec. 30: BABEL “Rillingen” CD

CALL FOR SUBMISSIONS

Also, now is a good time to put out a call for 2014 releases. If any of you have a project without a home, and it’s sufficiently weird (or at least insufficiently normal), and you’d like to see it get a small, ridiculously packed, run (50 copies, tops) drop us a line: arachnidiscs@hotmail.com

Or if you know a weirdo whose music needs a home, send them our way.

And if you’re someone who we’ve been discussing a release with, this is a friendly reminder to send us those files!

We plan to do up to a maximum of 12 releases (cassette / CD / CDEP / maybe a 7″?!?) next year, ideally on a monthly basis. Also, there’s a very specific (yet completely undefined) label aesthetic (and limited budget), so let that be a caveat that we reserve the right to be beggars and picky choosers.

IN DECLINE: Cassette Store Day Exclusive

25/08/2013

ad100-completed

The iconic Sonic Boom record store in Toronto is celebrating the first ever “Cassette Store Day” by hosting a CASSETTE FAIR on September 7th, 2013.

Tape and micro labels from across the city (and beyond) are participating, including Arachnidiscs Recordings. As it happens, we’re coming up on our 100th release and wanted to do something special for the auspicious serial number AD100. It seemed like a perfect opportunity to do a retrospective compilation covering material from some of our long out-of-print titles.

The result is IN DECLINE SINCE ’99.

A limited run of 10 home-dubbed C60 tapes (in a choice of two colours) will be available EXCLUSIVELY at the cassette fair. It compiles 17 tracks pulled from previous compilations and releases since the label was forged in 1999. Featured artists include Gown, Amarillo Stars (pre-Gown project), Partli Cloudi, Cellar Doors (pre-Elfin Saddles project), Apollo Ghosts (rare early track), New Yaki (collaboration between Gown, Partli Cloudi and Moonwood), Flatbed (brutal west-coast noise rock), Early Man, Everything For Everyone (Crusties/Down With Everything related), and more.

AD100inserts

The best part? These puppies are going to be FREE with purchase of any Arachnidiscs tape at our table (or at cost for $2).

The best part, that is, aside from the music, of course.

AD100open

Another unexpected boon of this project was the experience duping the tapes by hand. I hadn’t done that since the ’90s, before I started Arachnidiscs (with the advent of CD-R). There’s something truly satisfying about home dubbing, a real sense of accomplishment, a real connection to the release I’d forgotten about (even though most of our packaging is done by hand, the tapes and CDs are pro-duped). Folding the inserts and stickering the tapes, sliding them neatly in the box… it’s a real zen zone. A completely different experience than having a case of completed tapes arrive on your doorstep and it reminded me why I wanted to run a label in the first place.

Not that I’d want to dub a run much larger than ten by hand. So I highly recommend, if you’re able in the Toronto area, you make it down to Sonic Boom (795 Bathurst St) on September 7th (noon til five) to get a copy, There will not be a second run.

Upcoming Releases Summer/Fall 2013

26/07/2013

2013 has been pretty quiet for us so far but when it rains, it pours. Summer and fall are looking stormy for us. Here’s a brief list of the releases we’re currently prepping.

AD091 – SEMEN PRIEST – s/t – Cassette

Psychedelic industrial funk pop.

AD092 – A SACRED CLOUD – ENSOLEILLÉ, 1972 – Cassette

In conjunction with Jeunesse Cosmique LP release. Analogue soundscapes, musique concrete collages, severe art drones.

AD093 – PARTLI CLOUDI – Two Moron Ever Nose – CD

New solo album by Summer Amp (and fOLKwASTE Library) dude. A deep folkloric journey into the library of the transcendental mind. Spoken word collages, tribal percussions, primal psychedelia.

AD094 – Ѫΰϯᶓԃ Ʀѧϊѣѻὦ – Intuitions – CD

Michelle Proksell resides in Beijing and loves/lives China as a dream machine of animated .gif images, weird montages and awesome t-shirts. Deaf improvisation based on colors and hues, blue(s) gospels in unknown languages, seas of shimmering drones, electro-acoustic processing and outdated acid folk. Classical without class, psychedelic without psyche, songwriting without writing. “Intuitions” is the result of sparse improvisational sessions conjured in Shanghai bedrooms and living rooms during 2012. Hours worth of recordings were trimmed, mixed and mastered with poetic freedom at Zulmàt studio in Rome, Italy.

AD095 – BEARD CLOSET / PRIMATE PYRAMID – Cassette

Split tape series sides 17 & 18. Two sides of essential Skullflower-esque doom-gaze guitar improvisations.

AD096 – ROSS BAKER / BABEL – Cassette

Split tape series sides 19 & 20. A combined hour’s worth of ambient VCR jams from two sides of the Atlantic Ocean. Sound collage dudes abide.

Mysterious SEMEN PRIEST Demo Submission

08/07/2013

Exhibit4-bloodcondom

Most of our demo submissions come via email. As a rule these submission are pretty vague, usually containing no more than “I have some music I’d like to release on your label” and link to a Soundcloud. A lot of these just end up in the trash folder since I’m not much interested putting out music by people who don’t even bother to introduce themselves.

This didn’t prepare me, however, for a physical submission we received in the mail a few months ago from a band or artist who appeared to be called Semen Priest. I wasn’t sure if it was a joke or a legitimate submission and, either way, if it was something more sinister.

Click to embiggen.

Perhaps it’s best to start with a complete inventory of the padded mailer:

  1. A crushed, desiccated rose.
  2. An unmarked CD-R in a (protective) Zip-lock baggie.
  3. A condom which APPEARED TO CONTAIN BLOOD.
  4. And a computer-printed letter (in Comic Sans, no less) which read, “You should do our tape. xoxo Semen Priest. PS- We know where you live.”

Well, that last line was disconcerting. Then I noticed the mailing label was addressed to me personally so I decided this was clearly a friend who’s having me on. I chose to ignore the voice in my head that was telling me: Your name is well documented online as being the guy who runs Arachnidiscs, it’d be reasonable to put your name on the envelope and assume you live there.
