While rehearsing for live dates in Winter of 2013 and Spring of 2014, BABEL (Jakob Rehlinger) recorded over 11 hours of prepared guitar improvisations (direct to 2-track stereo). In a feat of endurance, he distilled those hours down to one 79 minute album, ZWERM (“Swarm”). Those familiar with BABEL’s Heurter and Rillingen albums will know what to expect from these solo guitar explorations—percussive, almost industrial rhythms blended with harmonic drones and sparse, lyrical melody lines. Added to the existing recipe are elements of spoken-word cassette collages which were sampled and mixed live into the throbbing hum.

AD114. TOTAAL: The Complete ZWERM Sessions

Additionally, we’re offering an extremely limited edition 48-track USB called TOTAAL which contains 11 hours and three minutes of material from the complete sessions plus two concert recordings. The ZWERM album is included in its final 6-track form, 8 additional takes on the theme, along with six other collections titled MAELSTROM (‘Sturm’ variations), OVIS (electric sheep), VERWORFEN (discarded segments collaged together), THANATOPHOBIK (ghost voices and the fear of death) and VÅR (live performances in Spring).

While the city the rumbles with the subterranean boom of frost-quakes, RILLINGEN (meaning “Shivers” or “Chills” in Dutch) burrows deep into a frozen landscape of trembling souls, burning themselves to keep warm as they freeze to death in an orgy of winter ecstasy.

On this hour-long polar vortex of solo electric guitar improvisations, BABEL‘s more lyrical side returns to join the percussive, extended techniques of the previous two EPs—HEURTER and STURM und DRANG—finally bringing two halves of BABEL into one cohesive whole.

Recorded live, direct to 2-track on Mothers Day, 2013, in six takes (three of which make up the 37-minute closer) using echo loops and, fittingly (though pun not intended), an Electro-Harmonix “Freeze” pedal.

Side 13 — SILENT LAND TIME MACHINE

Track listing: Many Many Happy Returns / The Contours Of Perfect Distance.

They say everything’s bigger in Texas. That includes the mind-expanding tones coming out of out of Silent Land Time Machine’s epic looped violin compositions that weave and drone like tumbleweeds on crack’d black asphalt. Good sounds from bad lands. “Many Many Happy Returns” recorded LIVE at Marigold Studios (R.I.P.) in London, ON “The Contours Of Perfect Distance” recorded LIVE at Le Cagibi, in Montréal, QC, with additional amenities provided by Khôra & Nick Kuepfer.

BIO: SLTM; an inadvertent aural accumulator; a fractured signal; a concerted, compassionate memory resistor; the IN/OUT of an organic circuit experiencing itself for the first time; a starry-eyed-bliss-transformer; nerves attaching, detaching, strengthening, and severing; aimed at the clearing of neural circuitry with the frequency of white wind.

Side 14 — MOONWOOD, Soul Oaks

Track listing: Introlude / Drone #3 / Cardamom #2 / November /Cardamom #1 / Woodpecker

Moonwood guitarist, Jakob Rehlinger, works through six electric and acoustic solo guitar improvisations trying to get somewhere in the Easts (Far- and Middle-) while remaining rooted in the Americas. Lyrical, soaring airs played over dark, oily drones. Recorded direct to 2-track live in Moonwood’s rehearsal studio between Nov 2011 and May 2012.

BIO: Moonwood is the psych-improv project of Toronto (ON) guitarist Jakob Rehlinger, often joined by Jacqueline Noire on percussion, vocals and woodwinds. Solo or as a duo, Moonwood’s music is informed by (while not necessarily adhering to the traditions of) Tibetan funeral chants, krautrock, Balinese gamelan, classic psychedelic rock, traditional Japanese and South Asian music, dub, free-jazz and the usual grab-bag of avant-folk styles
